Recent International Trends in Comintern Studies
and the Direction of Future Research

Youngsu Won

The Communist International or Comintern (1919-1943), initiated as a
vanguard of the world revolution in the aftermath of the 1917 Russian
Revolution, was one of the most significant political movements of the 20th
century. Except for the Russian Revolution itself, it was also one of the most
important political events in the first half of the ‘short twentieth century’. In
spite of its importance, historical studies of the Comintern were extremely
restrictive and, especially in the cold war era, most research remained stuck in
knee-jerk anti-communism.
However, after the collapse of the Soviet regime, the opening of the
Comintern Archive also opened a space for Comintern studies. New historio-
graphic approaches that emphasized history from below also criticized the
pre-1991 Cold War school. Since then, Comintern studies have produced rich
results based on diverse approaches and creative methodologies and, moving
beyond existing local, national andregional studies, developed a new genre of
transnational studies. However, in the centenary year of the Communist
International, there remains a need for a new project of the Comintern’s general
history, based on the recent achievements of various research projects
