Re-reading Engels: His Review of Marx’s
“A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy”

Michael Heinrich

For a long time, Marx and Engels were effectively seen as one intellectual
unit whereby a proposition expressed by one was believed to express the view
of both. Particularly in the case of Engels’ remarks on the relation of “logical”
and “historical” presentation in this review were such writings considered to be
fully representative of Marxian “logical-historical” method. In the second half
of the 20 th century, however, the differences between Marx and Engels were
stressed ever more emphatically and Engels was even accused of distorting
Marx’s critique of political economy. There are indeed considerable differences
between Marx’s and Engels’ approach to method. However, Engels’s
presentation in this review was strongly influenced by the fact that much of the
information he received from Marx was unclear and incomplete.
Communication between Marx and Engels was often far more ambiguous and
indeterminate, atleast regarding theoretical problems in the field of critique of
political economy, than is often assumed to be the case.
