Gramsci and Althusser as Political Readers of Machiavelli

Sangwon Han

Machiavelli sought cohesion for the political unification in Italy, which was
suffering from foreign powers amid its split state. To this end, he called for the
practical capabilities of the prince to form an alliance with the people. In this
respect, Machiavelli was adapted by two modern thinkers who wanted to
overcome the crisis of Marxism. In analyzing the unique conditions of modern
capitalism, Gramsci and Althusser theorized fundamental defects which were
inherent in Marxism, especially the concept of politics. This paper discusses
how Machiavelli's political legacies were read by Gramsci and Althusser
respectively, and tries to reveal the relationships of such reading methods and
the meaning of their ‘encounters’. The discussion will follow the procedures of
Machiavelli, Gramsci’s reading of Machiavelli and Althusser’s reading of the
latter. In particular, discussions about Althusser's acceptance and criticism of
Gramsci's Machiavelli interpretation are based on his manuscripts published
since the 1990s.
