Why Do We Need to Ask a Marxist Fundamental Question Now?

Seung-wook BAEK

Two long-forgotten books have emerged to pose a Marxist
fundamental question about the dictatorship of proletariat. We have to
investigate the aporia of this concept together with imagining a feasible socialist
politics. These two books display their excellence by posing the concept as an
internal necessity of the capitalist mode of production ruled by the capitalist
production process and social relations. However, this elaboration reveals more
critical aporia and we may consider one of the possible exits by framing the
question using Immanual Wallerstein’s arguments on the modern world-system.
Here I suggest ‘one, two or three’ approaches to feasible socialisms to reveal the
concept’s internal aporia . In the history of ‘real socialisms’ in the 20th century,
the issue of the dictatorship of proletariat moved implicitly from the internal
political necessity of overcoming the capitalist mode of production to concrete
subjects of impending revolutions, supported by new slogans like ‘proletarian
internationalism’. Additionally, we may add one more field of socialist politics
to existing two notions of socialisms by referring to Michel Foucault’s modern
rupture of discursive formations. With these triple fields of socialisms, we may
find the actuality of two books and the necessity to transform the given
questions into more appropriate ones concerned with contemporary mass
politics.
