The Coming New Mode of Production and Marxism Deokmin KIM This article summarizes Dumenil and Levy’s discussion of managerial capitalism, building on the concepts and framework of their discussion in Managerial Capitalism. Dumenil and Levy discuss the emergence and development of managerial capitalism from the perspective of Marx’s theory of history (mode of production, classes, and historical dynamics) and through the concepts of sociality and socialization. The article also discusses ‘modernity’ in the context of a theory of sociality developed in Managerial Capitalism. In Managerial Capitalism, modernity is described as a specific form, ‘capitalist modernity’ and ‘managerial modernity’. The capitalist modernity of ‘freedom, equality, and ownership’ is the driving force of social progress and is in line with the capitalist mode of production. At the same time, it is also a source of social regression in terms of class domination. Managerial modernity is all about ‘meritocracy.’ Dumenil and Levy do not seek to deconstruct Marxist concepts and methods, but rather to maintain and develop Marxist concepts and methods and enter into dialogue with other social theories. Key words: Managerial Capitalism, Socialization, Capitalist Modernity, Managerial Modernity
